April 11, 2008: The Birth
"The Birth" of SOUHL Foundation was celebrated with a grand party on a pier over San Francisco Bay at historic Fort Mason. The fundraiser was the first eco-friendly event to be produced at the center. Founder, Tayeb Al-Hafez believes that art brings balance and pleasure to our lives, and his passion for art was evident the moment one entered the huge Festival Pavilion, designed by his friend, British stage designer Rajha Shakir, for the gala. Her group created a dramatic backdrop for the work of artists, dancers and musicians from around the world, who were there to support "The Birth" of SOUHL Foundation. The food that was served was artful as well. "Health" and "pleasure" were present in equal measure in the spectacular, all-organic dining experience provided by Aurora Martinez of the Hyde Street Bistro for the foundation's guests. SOUHL Foundation's message of, "mental, emotional and physical wellness" was put forward in the night's program of words, music, and dance by speakers and entertainers. At the end of the evening Dr. Al-Hafez asked his guests keep these three things in mind as they left the party:
- Each one of us deserves health education and health care access.
- Everything we do throughout the day affects our own mental, emotional and physical wellness and of that of everyone around us.
- We have to start at home (right here in San Francisco) to achieve global health equity. Taking action has to start with oneself.
